Riddle Fence is a Newfoundland and Labrador-based journal of arts and culture, published three times yearly. We endeavour to publish high-quality fiction, non-fiction, poetry, artwork, and anything else that fits on paper and punches above its own artistic weight.
So what are we looking for? Simply amazing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual art. We only accept previously unpublished work. We license first serial rights; copyright remains with the author.
For fiction and nonfiction, our suggested maximum word count is 3,000 words, but if it’s brilliant and a bit longer, we just might go with it.
For nonfiction, we’re looking for essays on the arts or on particular artists, or on aspects of culture and art as an idea or as a specific practice, or interviews with artists of all disciplines. We are also seeking creative non-fiction with a strong narrative drive.
For poetry, all poems in a single submission should be included in a single document (.doc or PDF) attached to the email. Poems should NOT be typed into the body of the email. Poetry submissions may be single-spaced. Please submit no more than 10 pages per submission (3 to 5 poems is best). No more than one poem on a page.
What aren’t we looking for? Travel writing, re-told folklore or academic essays. Your best bet? Read some of our back issues and you’ll quickly get an idea of what we publish.
For visual art: 300 dpi minimum. We publish in full colour but we also accept black and white.
When submitting, please make sure your submission goes to the right e-mail address:
A few other guidelines:
All unsolicited submissions to Riddle Fence should be unpublished (neither in print nor on the internet), original works.
Include a cover letter with your name, contact information, title(s) you are submitting, and one to three lines of biographical information about your writing career.
Put your name on every page of your submission.
Riddle Fence accepts simultaneous submissions, but you MUST inform us immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere.
Be patient. We receive many submissions, and it may take up to 6 months for a response.
